One of South Lakeland's oldest villages, Cartmel grew up around its famous 12th century Priory.

Originally encompassing just 22 acres of land, with access only through the still remaining Gatehouse, Cartmel village was the hub of a large parish stretching from Ulverston to the south, Windermere to the north and Beetham to the east.
